Let's give a little thanks to the trees that give us shade, provide us with paper, build us shelter, prevent us from sinking (canoes guys, c'mon!), release oxygen for us, and are just damn nice for climbing. Even if you forgot (I know I remembered a bit late), don't forget to thank the trees today, tomorrow, and every day. If you have the chance to plant a tree, just got for it!

For more info, check out the National Arbor Day Foundation Website

Also, if you're interested in adopting a tree, there'll be plenty of chances at the Adopt-A-Tree events going on around town.
Here's a schedule in case any of you would like to get some free trees for yourself or someone you know this summer!

When:
Saturday
May 10
9 am-12 noon</b>

Trees available:
Vera Wood, Pigeon Plum, Longan, Tamarind

Where:
Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds
11200 SW 24 Street
Miami

When:
Sunday
June 8
9 am-12 noon

Trees available:
Green Buttonwood, Orange Geiger, Mango, Red Mulberry

Where:
Miami-Dade College - North
11380 NW 27 Avenue
Bldg. 400
Miami

When:
Saturday
July 26
9 am-12 noon

Trees available:
Queensland Crepe Myrtle, Paradise Tree, Star Fruit, Lychee, Jaboticaba

Where:
Miami-Dade County Auditorium
2901 West Flagler Street
Miami

Or to learn more about Miami Dade's Adopt-a-Tree program, check out the official site here

Even if you live in an apartment, a container garden can be just as nice. It's great for the environment plus nice on your wallet as you will then have access to free herbs, flowers, fruits and/or vegetables!

- Use public transportation! Many of you live in places with decent public trans. However, if you're in Miami like I am, you know this is Home of the Shitty Drivers en Masse. If more of us were to make use of our bus and train system, the headaches on the road would surely lessen. So if you have some time, take a walk to your nearest bus stop and catch up on some reading as you let someone else take the wheel. For more info on our local transit system, visit the Miami Dade Transit website here

- Switch to a vegetarian/vegan/organic/locally grown diet! Eating less meat, dairy, and eggs is more environmentally friendly. Organic foods are also better for us as they are free of harmful pesticides and hormones. Eating locally reduces our carbon footprint. A combination of the three proves to be the best and "greenest" type of diet.

- Reduce, Reuse, RECYCLE!! Recycle everything that you can, from plastic and glass bottles to aluminum cans and newspapers. Remember to always put recyclable goods in the proper receptacles. Reduce the amount of anything that you use. If you normally use 2 of something, try only using one. Buy recycled and/or organic whenever possible. Buy reusable items such as a reusable water bottle rather than a pack of 24 plastic bottles. Bring your own canvas grocery bag to the store instead of using up more plastic bags.

I'll be writing out a list later of the ways I intend on going green this Earth Day. How will you be doing your part?

On the way to school this morning, I turned to this local AM talk/news station and they started getting in to the subject of license plates, or vanity plates as they're supposed to be called. For $25 anyone can get a specialized license plate to support a cause/school/organization that they choose. I don't mind the school ones - education is important. I very much like the ones that help organizations like the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee or ones that support NASA. These things are part of our community and are very rarely seen as offensive or oppressive to anyone. Over the last few years, i've noticed an increase in Choose Life plates. It's my belief if they have a plate like this, which whether you like it or not is most likely heavily tied in to Christian fundamentalism, you must have a Pro Choice license plate. I've never seen one yet but apparently there's a site looking to petition our government for one. I say it's about time.

However, it turns out that the Christian Right is at it again. The djs on the station were fuming as they went on about how apparently there is a Christian vanity plate in the works. It'll be a plate that says "I Believe". And while the X-phile in me wishes it meant I Believe in aliens, government conspiracy, etc... I know it has nothing to do.

The Bradenton has an article about it here. This is going to cause quite a backlash if it goes through. What ever happened to separation of church and state? Well then if you're going to have a Christian plate, you might as well have a Jewish one, a Hindu one, a Muslim one, a Buddhist one, an Atheist one, and Agnostic one, hell... anything goes, right?

Fucking ridiculous.

Sure, they're goofy and it would make me uncomfortable to see Angus Young talking to a priest and/or a group of young Catholic school boys... But i'll be damned if I don't get all goose bumpy when I hear the words DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP blast out of my cheap car stereo speakers.

On a more somber note... WTF of the day goes to USA Today (or rather, to one Louisiana State researcher and the mongoloids who work with said individual). If I was meant to live in a bacteria ridden swamp (whoops, too late, I already live in Miami), I'm sure I would have alligator blood too. For now, no need to kill more animals for your fucking theories nor for man's need to become superman. Egh... At least I would hope that once they've finished their goddamn research they can leave the gators in peace. Doubtful. But at least I can hope that they get bitten by the alligators, no?

One final note: I really, truly believe that Grounded For Life was one of the early 2000's best and most under appreciated shows. I can't say I actually watched it when it was going on, but they give reruns on ABC Family most afternoons and i'll be damned if I can pull away. It's witty, slightly underhanded in a good way, realistic without being crappy reality tv, and just overall good, funny entertainment. It's the younger, edgier sibling of old tv greats like Growing Pains and . Not too blatant where the only amusing things are dick and fart jokes and miscellaneous debauchery but not so tame that it's not afraid to mention pot smoking or the awkwardness of teenage sexuality. Yeah. I can dig it. Anyone concur?
